Startup sounds used to be cool, they used to mean something.
If I was to say: PlayStation 1 startup sound, you would play it in your head. That soothing buwwwwwwmmmm, tinkle, slcing that meant you were about to have the best polygonal time.
Or if I said: Gamecube startup. You would remember that little box do do do do doing over the screen into the logo, followed by the satisfying drum thump.
Windows used to have the best startup sounds oh my days, did it have some bangers.
XP was great and indelible on the minds of all current PC using 30-40 year olds. That was the PC sound for those coming of age in the digital space.
Edging it out was Windows 95’s, the start of the true sound card for every PC era and Multimedia for consumers as a bells and whistles kind of everything.
I will even concede, that while one of the most shocking OSes put out by Microsoft, (and this is a company that made Windows 8,) the Windows ME startup is a pleasing time.
My favourite, though, oh my favourite my all time bestest and most missed, is Windows 98. My favourite Windows. The Windows where I learned that this tech, this box of sand that makes calculations I could only dream of, this screen of 800pixels by 600pixels, would be the biggest part of my future forever more.
